Why Florence?

By Carlotta Ferrari, General Manager, Destination Florence Convention Bureau
Is there a theme to the Round Table in Florence?

Yes! ‘It’s up to us’ because the work and aims of associations are essential towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN, especially SDG 17 on Partnerships. The role of civil society is of increasing relevance in a changing world, and that means you and I need to do all we can, going forward together, because ‘It’s up to us’.

Why is Florence a great place to hold the UIA Round Table?

Florence blends its world-renowned, inspiring artistic and cultural heritage with cutting-edge conference venues, including the Fortezza da Basso, Palazzo dei Congressi and Palazzo degli Affari. Its strategic location in Italy ensures easy access via well-connected airports and high-speed rail, while the city's compact size allows participants to navigate easily between venues and attractions. Florence’s historical charm and top-quality hospitality make it an ideal setting for high-level international events and conferences, such as the UIA Round Table.

The members of Team Florence, who are Destination Florence Convention Bureau, OIC Group and Firenze Fiera, are enthusiastically combining their efforts and working together for the success of this Round Table.

Did you know that…?

  • Florence has seen a steady increase in conference and event participation, with an annual growth of 20-30%. This rising trend highlights the city's growing appeal as a premier destination for international events.
  • Florence is a leader in sustainable event management, with key operators like Firenze Fiera and OIC recognized for their commitment to eco-friendly practices. From sustainable catering services to waste reduction initiatives, the city supports green event planning aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • While famous for its Renaissance heritage, Florence is also a hub for innovation in science and technology, particularly in fields like biomedical research and digital technology. This blend of history and innovation makes an unexpected hub for scientific and technological conferences.

Help for associations?

As Destination Florence Convention Bureau, our team provides comprehensive and tailored support, including assistance with bid submissions and site inspection arrangements.
Associations can benefit from exclusive deals, such as the use of institutional venues with free rental options, providing significant value for their events. Moreover, we have strong ties with local institutions, scientific communities, and organizations, ensuring a collaborative and well-supported experience for conferences held in Florence.

Where to meet?

Florence has an exceptional exhibition and congress area right in the heart of the city, boasting more than 100,000sqm scattered among three adjacent structures, with flexible and multipurpose spaces suitable for any type of event. Fortezza da Basso – Florence’s Renaissance fortress, Palazzo dei Congressi – a 19th century Villa, and the modern Palazzo degli Affari are perfect for hosting international conferences, equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

The UIA Round Table will be hosted at the Palazzo degli Affari which can be ‘virtually’ visited thanks to the innovative interactive tool ViewIt.

Where to stay?

Florence offers a wide range of top-quality accommodation options, with more than 75% of the city hotels located within 1km from congress venues. This includes around 20 five-star hotels such as the Four Seasons and Hotel Savoy, over 100 four-star hotels such as Grand Hotel Baglioni and Glance Hotel, and even more three-star hotels.

How to reach Florence?

Florence is easily accessible by air and train. There are three international airports within 110km: Amerigo Vespucci in Florence, Pisa Airport, and Bologna Airport. Direct flights connect the city to major European hubs, and Florence’s airport is just a 15-minute tram ride from the city center and main conference venues. High-speed trains also offer convenient links to other major European cities, making travel to Florence both quick and efficient.

Somewhere special: personal recommendations/insider tips?

For a unique experience, the Florence Team has arranged four special tours included in the Round Table programme: an exclusive tour of the medieval Palazzo Vecchio or Palazzo Medici Riccardi; a guided visit to the extraordinary museum inside Santa Maria Novella church, boasting the greatest artists of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; a visit to Museo del Novecento, to approach the arts of the 20th century.

If delegates have some extra time, we also recommend exploring the hidden gems of the Oltrarno district or the iconic villages in the Florentine countryside, far from the frantic tourist areas: live Florence as a local!
