History
Established 22 Jan 2001, as per E-XE3068 - Council of the European Union Decision (2001-79-CFSP), as part of Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP / PESC) within the framework of F-XF2147 - European Union (EU). Decision to set up the Committee made during meeting of E-XE7976 - European Council, Dec 1999, Helsinki (Finland). U-XJ7515 - Interim Body of Military Representatives of Member States' Chiefs of Defence (interim Military Body) acted as precursor. Since 2011, functions within E-XJ5453 - European External Action Service (EEAS).
Aims
Provide the Political and Security Committee (PSC) with military advice and recommendations on all military matters within the EU; exercise military decisions of all military activities within the EU framework; provide military advice to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on all military matters and act as the primary Point of Contact with the Operation Commanders of the EU's military operations.

Committee (meets weekly), composed of Chiefs of Defence of Member States; Chairman (CEUMC) appointed by the Council of the European Union on recommendation of the Committee meeting and acts in an international capacity representing the EUMC at the PSC and the Council as appropriate.
