Founded

1120 France

History

1120, Prémontré (France), by St Norbert de Xanten, as a Catholic religious order of men and women. Approved 1126, and subsequently in 1617-1624. New constitution 1883. Premonstratensians follow the rule of St Augustine together with special statutes of their own. The Premonstratensian Order consists of: 35 independent canonries or communities of men; 7 independent canonries of women who are also called canonesses. Additionally, a number of men's communities have associations for lay people, married and single, who wish to remain in the world, while living according to the spirituality of the Order, in so far as possible. The men and women members of these groups are traditionally referred to as members of the Third Order. Canons Regular or Prémontré are also known as Norbertines or White Canons.
