Founded

1542

History

1542, when instituted by Pope Paul III, as Sacred Roman and Universal Inquisition or Sacred Congregation of the Universal Inquisition -- Congregatio Romanae et universalis Inquisitionis. Congregation reorganized by St Pius X, 29 Jun 1908, when name changed to Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office. Further reformed, 7 Dec 1965, by Pope Paul VI, when current title adopted, methods of doctrinal examination updated and preservation and promotion of the faith given priority over the punitive function of condemnation. Function, responsibilities and norms governing the Congregation most recently specified, 28 Jun 1988, on reorganization of the Roman Curia by Pope John Paul II. Comes within the framework of F-XF8042 - Administrative Hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church.

Aims

Promote and safeguard the Doctrine of the faith and morals throughout the Catholic world; foster studies to deepen understanding of the faith and ensure response in the light of faith to new questions arising from progress in human knowledge and culture; assist Bishops in the exercise of their responsibilities as authentic teachers and masters of the faith.

College of Cardinals and Bishops, headed by Cardinal Prefect, assisted by Secretary, Under Secretary and Promote of Justice. Offices (3), each with a Head and comprising Officials: Doctrinal; Disciplinary; Matrimonial. Special Official for dispensations related to the priesthood. Consultors (meeting weekly to examine specific cases). Experts. Cardinal Prefect acts as President of E-XF4771 - Pontifical Biblical Commission, F-XF9065 - International Theological Commission and E-XE2302 - Pontifical Commission "Ecclesia Dei".
