1993, as International GPS Service for Geodynamics (IGS) -- Service GPS international pour la géodynamique -- Servicio Internacional GPS para Geodinamica, within the framework of International Association of Geodesy (IAG). Began formal operation, 1 Jan 1994, following 1-year pilot phase. Responsible union: International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). Also previously known as International GPS Service (IGS) -- Service GPS international -- Servicio Internacional GPS.


Provide the highest quality data and products as the standard for global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) in support of earth science research, multidisciplinary applications and education; advance scientific understanding of the earth system components and their interactions; facilitate other applications benefiting society.

Foundation of IGS is a global network over over 350 permanent, continuously operating geodetic-quality Global Positioning System (GPS) and GPS/GLONASS sites. Analysis centers (10) regularly process the data and contribute products to the analysis center coordinator, who produces the official IGS combined products. IGS classic product set consists of: satellite orbits; clocks; earth rotation parameters; station positions. Newer products include: GLONASS satellite ephemerides; tropospheric zenith path delay; ionospheric total electron content grid products. Contributes to the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF).
