Founded

1982-10-29

History

Established by an agreement which entered into force 2 Nov 1984. Agreement amended 2 Nov 1984, Managua (Nicaragua). Arose from Action Committees of F-XF4530 - Sistema Económico Latinoamericano (SELA), and replaced Action Committee on Sea and Freshwater Products (CAPMAD), set up 1977, whose activities it took over, following decision of 3rd Annual Meeting of Ministers responsible for matters concerning fisheries. Officially commenced activities 1 Jan 1985.

Aims

Increase production and trade of marine and freshwater products; boost consumption of such products; promote the generation of sources of income and employment; promote rational exploitation of the potential of fisheries in the region; coordinate joint actions with Member States.

Conference of Ministers (annual), comprising Ministers or Secretaries of State responsible for matters related to the fishery sector, or their alternates. Governing Board (meets annually prior to Conference), consisting of an official representative and substitute appointed by each country. Executive Director appointed by Conference for 3-year term; Executive Management Board. Technical Committee for the Technological Development of Fish Products in Latin America and the Caribbean.
