For instance, the UIA has long been concerned with the complexity represented by the networks of international organizations generated though research into <a href="/international-organizations-research" target="_self">international organizations and civil society</a> and detailed in the <a href="/yearbook" target="_self"><em>Yearbook of International Organizations</em></a>. The <a href="/archive/functional-classification/fig7" target="_self">Integrative Matrix of Human Preoccupations</a> which classifies international organizations by subject is therefore an experimental classification system for the exploration of interdisciplinary relationships between organizations, problems, strategies, values and human development. Our complementary work on <a href="/archive/visualization" target="_self">Alternative Representations of Information</a>, particularly <a href="/archive/visualization/ivs" target="_self">information visualization and sonorification</a> and the use of VRML software to map relationships and networks within the databases, is another way of providing new ways of navigating complexity.</p> <p>One section of the <em>Encyclopedia of World Problems and Human Potential</em> includes an extensive bibliography of integrative knowledge, unitary understanding, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. For instance, the 1991 edition assembled descriptions of the range of concepts or conceptual approaches considered ‘integrative’ such as "global", "integrative", "networking" and "systematic". These are considered by some international bodies to be crucial for the organization of any effective strategic response to global problems, and such words have become ‘buzzwords’ in today’s international climate. </p> <p>Further research conducted under the umbrella of the <em>Encyclopedia</em> includes the <a href="/archive/ency-knowledge" target="_self">Integrative Concepts and Symbols</a> section that identifies classes of symbols from traditional and modern cultures, to order the large amount of material available on this topic. In addition, in order to address the possibility that the kind of integrative approach required may not be fully describable within the language of any single conceptual framework however sophisticated, research has also been conducted in the <a href="/archive/ency-metaphor" target="_self">Patterns and Metaphor</a> section of the <em>Encyclopedia</em> into the use of metaphor for exploring new ways of understanding complexity. The UIA is also exploring non-western ways of interrelating patterns of change, and details on <a class="ext" href="http://www.laetusinpraesens.org/docs/chingndx.php" target="_blank">Transformation Metaphors</a><span class="ext"></span> derived from the Chinese Book of Changes (I Ching) are available at an external site, as well as a proposal for an <a class="ext" href="http://www.laetusinpraesens.org/docs/cultency.php" target="_blank">encyclopedia of conceptual insights from the world's cultures</a><span class="ext"></span>.</p> <p>This work on transdisciplinarity also complements other research associated with the <em>Encyclopedia of World Problems and Human Potential</em>. For instance, integrative knowledge is important for comprehending the nature of global problems detailed in the <a href="/archive/ency-wpgi" target="_self">World Problems and Global Issues</a> section; for understanding the implementation of remedial actions detailed in the <a href="/archive/ency-gss" target="_self">Global Strategies and Solutions</a> section; for providing frameworks to interrelate seemingly unrelated values and value perspectives described in the <a href="/archive/ency-values" target="_self">Human Values and Wisdom</a> section; to inspire integrative characteristics required of innovative techniques suggested in the <a href="/archive/ency-trans-approaches" target="_self">Transformative Approaches to Social Organization</a> section; and by inspiring the parallel integration of the individual and society aspired to in <a href="/archive/ency-human-development" target="_self">Human Potential and Development</a> section.</p> </div> Wed, 16 Oct 2013 17:33:10 +0000 rachele 3742 at https://uia.org https://uia.org/archive/ency-examples-scope#comments Rationale https://uia.org/archive/ency-problems-rationale <div class="field-body"> <p>Documents produced by international organizations contain a great deal of information about the problems they face. Faced with this overload of information, most bodies survive by ignoring all but a small fraction of information available, and focus instead on carving out a small niche and cultivate a network of similarly minded bodies. Their work entails trying to formulate the most powerful strategy possible for action, and undermining the initiatives of those whom they perceive to be causing or sustaining such problems.</p> <p>There are problems with this approach. First, although there is agreement that there are many problems and that many are serious, little effort has been made to determine how many problems there are. Second, while it is becoming increasingly evident and accepted that problems interact with one another, and constitute complex networks or systems, little effort has been made to map this complexity. Such efforts have generally been limited to the production of simple maps of the relationships between major problems, or of more detailed maps for some particular problem area. These two factors mean that organizations seeking to solve world problems often do so in ignorance of the wider problem context in which they work - which hinders their work.</p> <p>Indeed, the <em>Encyclopedia</em> includes a profile of the problem that is its own justification: Recurrence of misapprehended world problems. This is exacerbated by (amongst other things) the complex interrelationship of world problems, the failure to profit from patterns of history, inadequate public information concerning problems, structural amnesia in institutional systems, exclusion of opposing views, and the pursuit of affluence. A feedback facility is integrated for that purpose to encourage recognition of the dynamics of the controversey that is often associated with this kind of information. Users can respond interactively to the profiles in the various databases by sending general comments on all or individual databases, or by sending specific comments about individual entries relating to a specific part of a profile or about the entry as a whole, by <a href="/contact-uia" target="_self">contacting us</a>. An extensive commentary on the scope of each database is available from any profile page.</p> <p> Obviously the less intervention required to put text into shape, the easier it is to transfer it from "comment" form into the database profile. On the other hand the comment facility does allow users to express views about a text (for other users to see), even if resources are not available to integrate it into the database. How the facility is opened up to on-line editing remains to be explored experimentally. In depends a great deal on the editorial discipline of those who choose to collaborate in this more constrained mode and how their capacity is demonstrated and assessed.</p> <div> </div> <hr size="3" /> <div> </div> <p> <b>Considerations before providing feedback</b></p> <p> You may want to consider the following before formulating your reply. The editors welcome users of these databases to assist in the provision of information which can improve both the quantity and quality of existing individual entries and their relationships, or describe new entries.</p> <ul> <li> The <i>Encyclopedia</i> is a work in progress: It is the product of a project which commenced in 1972. Major refinements have been made, and will continue to be made, to the descriptive text and to the pattern of cross-references, especially in response to feedback on inadequacies. In this sense the Encyclopedia is an unfinished product.</li> <li> A wide variety of disparate sources has been used: These include: international organization documents, academic papers and conference proceedings, periodicals and reviews, newspapers, journals, books and book lists. In this sense the information may be viewed as factual. However, such disparate sources reflect many levels of insight and expertise, as well as many cultures, ideologies, beliefs, priorities and biases. No attempt has been made to eliminate inconsistencies, although incompatible items have been treated as separate entries where appropriate. This is a deliberate editorial policy.</li> <li> International bodies and other constituencies around the world effectively function as editorial partners: The <i>Encyclopedia's</i> "neutral" information gathering function means that international bodies and other constituencies around the world effectively function as editorial partners in progressively refining information relating to their concerns in every field of activity. The databases are at no time considered complete, rather they reflect "work in progress" to clarify the complexity of the international community and its actions. A good deal of the material in the <i>Encyclopedia</i> has come directly from information provided by international organizations, particularly extracts from documents of the United Nations and other intergovernmental agencies. One of the great merits of working with such sources is that the material is either in the public domain or that the organizations are pleased to authorize wider use of it. It is hoped that the new avenues of access to the Encyclopedia made possible by electronic publication will initiate an even more comprehensive feedback of information from its users.</li> <li> Editorial Policy and Practice: The preparation of <i>Encyclopedia</i> entries is a true editorial process, ideally accomplished with minimal intervention. The editorial intent is not to provide a final "judgement" or "definition" of a world problem, strategy or path of human development; it is to provide a "description" which allows the arguments of diverse constituencies, as advocates for a particular initiative, problem, or approach, to speak for themselves. This involves gleaning material from different documents and combining elements in a suitable manner.</li> <li> The editors are not attempting to present "the objective truth", by making editorial judgements on what is factual and what is not: The aim is to present phenomena as they are perceived, from the framework or "mindset" within which each is experienced as significant, using whatever "facts" are considered most appropriate by those working within that framework. This is especially the case with the Claim and Counter-claim paragraphs. These paragraphs provide a means of reflecting, most explicitly, the contrast between advocates and detractors of particular concerns. The existence of such dynamics with the international community is, of course, implicit in the juxtaposition of strategies and problems, human values and human awareness; entries which appear at first glance to be mutually exclusive or irrelevant to each other, may on closer examination reveal interrelationships which can deepen understandings of the world "problematique" and "resolutique".</li> <li> Limitation of Existing Information: The production of this CD-Rom publication has been feasible only because of an extremely pragmatic approach to the collection and processing of information. The editors have deliberately set out to "open up" (through hyperlinks) and to highlight neglected categories of information. The intention has been to provide as broad a coverage as feasible, fleshing out the content to the extent possible. By deliberately sacrificing content to structure at this stage, it is hoped that even where the information supplied is inadequate, users will still be oriented to new features of the global system which others stress as meriting their attention -- and be more stimulated to contribute their own information to remedy deficiencies in the content of entries.</li> <li> Inclusion of information in this publication implies only that the editors considered the source reflecting the views of an international constituency: Such logistical restrictions on the comprehensiveness of research mean that the amount of information given for any entry does not reflect an editorial evaluation of its importance. Issues commonly accepted as important may be documented only briefly. This may be because of resource limitations, because of a profusion of relatively diffuse material available on them, because they are extremely well-documented elsewhere, or because they can be more effectively described through their "narrower" expressions. Little-known problems may be given relatively extensive coverage precisely because their existence is not well-recognized. Inclusion of information in this publication implies only that the editors considered the source from which it derived sensitive to and capable of reflecting the views of an international constituency, and therefore as being of significance to a wider audience.</li> <li> The quality of descriptions also varies: Some entries reflect an understanding carefully articulated by an international organization. Others are based on information assembled from a variety of sources. However, still others are based on what in intelligence circles is described as "low grade information". This is because the editorial bias is towards inclusion (rather than exclusion) of dubious or poor quality entries in order at least to acknowledge the sensitivity of some constituency to that issue. Once established in this way, and appropriately indexed, higher quality information may become available to improve the description.</li> </ul> <div> </div> <hr size="3" /> <div> </div> <p> <b>Concerns relating to feedback</b></p> <p> Issues and procedures relating to user feedback received in response to database entries and paragraphs within entries:</p> <ul> <li> Copyright and copyleft (for received and published materials): To the extent possible, the profiles are based on public domain information, especially that received from international organizations. Such information has often been very carefully prepared to filter out particular biases. Extensive use is made of other sources in weaving new phrases, sentences, or larger amounts of text into existing problem and strategy profiles. Since no profile is considered static or definitive, material from many sources will be combined in the continuing process of developing profiles.</li> <li> Interactive editorial participation: An important emphasis of the editorial process is to transform users in user editors, wherever this is consistent with improvement of the scope and quality of the material. This calls for innovation both on the software side as well as in the management of information flows in relation to resource constraints.</li> <li> User access and accreditation: These issues will be subject to constant review and experimentation.</li> <li> Editorial delays: The on-line comment facility is one way to reduce the backlog in making comments. Use of on-line editors will hopefully offer means of integrating comments into database profiles.</li> <li> Excluded materials: This concern will remain one of continuing review and experimentation.</li> <li> Errors of ommission and commission: See <a href="/archive/ency-disclaimer" target="_self">disclaimer and warning to users</a>.</li> <li> Controversial and defamatory material: This concern will remain one of continuing review and experimentation. It is to be expected that most "problem" profiles will be experienced by some as questioning the validity of the "strategies" they favour. One group's strategy will always tend to be another constituency's problem. Through the dynamics of the participative process, this information is subject to continuous revision, taking into account insights from both emerging coalitions of opinion and from perspectives articulated in public debate.</p> <p> [<a href="#profile">Profiles and relationships</a>] [<a href="#sources">Sources of information</a>] [<a href="#editing">Editing context</a>] [<a href="#bias">Editorial bias</a>]</p> <div> </div> <hr size="3" /> <div> </div> <p><b><a name="profile" title="profile" id="profile"></a>Profiles and relationships</b></p> <ul> <li> <b>Names:</b> In the case of problems and strategies, special editorial attention is given to naming. <a href="/archive/ency-problems-content">Problem names</a> are normally required to contain a negatively charged word (an implicit negative <a href="/archive/ency-values" target="_self">value</a>) to signal the problematic nature of the problem. Absence of a negatively charged word is an editorial signal that the problem profile has not been appropriately focused. <a href="/archive/ency-strategies-comm-3-5" target="_self">Strategy names</a> are expected to include an initial gerund that emphasizes the action oriented focus (eg <i>Monitoring pollution</i>) -- as is characteristic of the names of many strategies advocated by the international community. A profile may have many alternative names to capture extant variants with useful alternative keywords. Some of these names may first be provisionally positioned there, pending acquisition of information only relevant to the variant interpretation -- which would later justify creation of a separate profile.</li> <li> <b>Hyperlink editing: </b>Considerable effort is made to articulate relationships between profiles within a databases (eg problems) or between databases (eg problems to strategies, or to organizations). Since these relationships appear as hyperlinks in the profiles presented on the web, the process is essentially one of hyperlink editing. As with the text, no link is necessarily definitive and all are constantly subject to review. Hierarchies are continually modified, as are the functional relations between profiles, for both <a href="/archive/ency-problems-comm-3-4" target="_self">problems</a> and <a href="/node/159?kap=9" target="_self">strategies</a></li> <li> <b>Hierarchical positioning of information:</b> Care is taken to position descriptive text and links at appropriate levels within a hierarchy. Thus narrower problems or strategies may have very little descriptive text (because little has yet been incorporated at the detailed level) -- compared to that at a more general level (from which implications for the particular may be inferred). Conversely, text seemingly relevant at the more general level might be more appropriately repositioned to more detailed levels, leaving the general profile as a framework for hyprlinks to the narrower profiles. Functional links may also be more appropriately positioned higher up a hierarchy, rather than replicating such links from all the narrower items within that hierarchy.</li> <li> <b>Hierarchical complexity:</b> It is not assumed that a particular problem or strategy can only be part of a single hierarchy. A profile may point up to several broader profiles. It is accepted that a profile may have many narrower profiles associated with it and that this may eventually result in clustering into intermediate profiles.</li> <li> <b>Iterative reconfiguration of profiles and links:</b> New information is constantly used to test the knowledge-base. This involves a computer-enhanced set of conceptual processes (<a href="/archive/ency-problems-comm-3-5" target="_self">problems</a> | <a href="/archive/ency-strategies-comm-3-9" target="_self">strategies</a>) through which the patterns of knowledge are developed (<a href="/archive/ency-problems-comm-4-4" target="_self">problems</a> | <a href="/archive/ency-strategies-comm-4-4" target="_self">strategies</a>) and refined (<a href="/archive/ency-problems-comm-4-1" target="_self">problems</a> | <a href="/archive/ency-strategies-comm-4-2" target="_self">strategies</a>). A particular challenge is responding creatively to the "language games" through which issues and intitatives get defined (<a href="/archive/ency-problems-comm-4-3" target="_self">problems</a> | <a href="/archive/ency-strategies-comm-4-3" target="_self">strategies</a>) in the policy and academic literature, and in the media.</li> <li> <b>Multi-media experiments</b>: In order to provide extra assistance to editors in comprehending complex networks of relationship to detect areas meriting further work, various <a href="/archive/visualization" target="_self"> visualization</a> and <a href="/archive/visualization/cbnvm" target="_self">sound</a> experiments are provided as on-line tools.</li> <li> <b>Selective use of index tools:</b> The search facilities permit selection of items not in hierarchies, at the top of hierarchies, functional sources or sinks, and in loops. All these call for careful and continual checking as an indication of errors or areas requiring further work.</li> </ul> <p><b><br /> <a name="sources" title="sources" id="sources"></a>Sources of information</b></p> <ul> <li> <b>International focus:</b> International sources of information and perspectives are valued over national and local sources. Indicative international statistics are preferred to national statistics. However where international information is lacking or unavailable, national and local examples may be used.</li> <li> <b>Copyright and copyleft:</b> To the extent possible, the profiles are based on public domain information, especially that received from international organizations. Such information has often been very carefully prepared to filter out particular biases. Extensive use is made of other sources in weaving new phrases, sentences, or larger amounts of text into existing problem and strategy profiles. Since no profile is considered static or definitive, material from many sources will be combined in the continuing process of developing profiles.</li> <li> <b>Authoritative information: </b>With respect to both problem and strategy profiles, the quality and authority of information available in the public domain is frequently challenged. The profiles endeavour to capture the dynamics of such disputes, especially in the way that they inhibit action. No particular source is considered an authority that may not be challenged.</li> <li> <b>Nothing is complete: </b>The project is ambitious and is only feasible because of a particular logistical bias. Information is fed in when it is immediately available. If the amount of effort to acquire the information is too great at a particular time, further information will not be sought. Users are however pointed onward through a facility that generates web query links based on keywords in the profile names.</li> <li> <b>References and sources:</b> The text used in the body of a profile is seldom associated directly with a bibliographical reference. This is partly due to the fact that information on problems and strategies is frequently only a detail in much more general documents. Partly it is due to the manner in which descriptive profiles are constantly subject to editorial amendment in the light of clearer statements -- precluding direct quotation of text which may later be amended. The bibliographical approach taken is to refer users to books relevant to the profile, if such exist, and to refer users on to web documents through generated search queries. Periodical citations are rarely used; specialized bibliographies are favoured.</li> <li> <b>Constituency bias:</b> Priority is given to including information that reflects concern by particular constituencies, whether or not the problem or strategy is taken seriously by other constituencies. This means that the profiles reflect a wide variety of biases that are a reflection of biases active in society. The information presented in the light of such a bias may well be challenged by other information presented in the profile. To hold these contrasting perspectives special fields are used for <b>Claim</b> and <b>Counter-claim. </b>Special pleading, exaggerated and emotive claims may well be included there.</li> </ul> <p><b><br /> <a name="editing" title="editing" id="editing"></a>Editing context</b></p> <ul> <li> <b>Dynamic approach:</b> The profiles and cross-references are subject to constant review. They may be amended every day. Nothing is definitive. Every new piece of information received may be usefully seen as a challenge to what has already been fed into the databases, especially if new descriptors are used to identify a problem or strategy.</li> <li> <b>Profile construction by accretion:</b> In contrast to conventional practice, profiles are built up by accretion of information as it is received from sources encountered. Once entered, parts of the information may later be moved to other profiles if that is more appropriate.</li> <li> <b>Accreditation:</b> In contrast to conventional practice, the "author/editor" of the profile is not identifed. This is because the information may derive from many public domain sources, and be edited by a number of people at different times. Many of these sources may only provide minor details in sub-sections of reports on quite different subjects. Bibliographic references are only included if the document treats the problem or strategy in a comprehensive way. Such references are included when they are immediately available. Because of limited resources, they are seldom the subject of special literature searches -- nor are the most recent documents necessarily included.</li> <li> <b>Redistribution of information:</b> Amendments to one descriptive profile may require amendments to another. Profiles (eg problems or strategies) may be split or merged in the light of new information, greater precision regarding appropriate names, or greater clarity concerning the hierarchical structure.</li> <li> <b>Iterative editing:</b> Because of the complexity of the editing task, new information may be positioned provisionally within the existing pattern of profiles. This anticipates further work which would then move that material to a more relevant position within that pattern. This approach frees the editors to pursue priority editing tasks, whilst deferring action on that material.</li> <li> <b>Conciseness:</b> Problems and strategies are often described in the available literature with flowery text using special jargon that may preclude wider appreciation of the points made. An effort is made to rewrite such descriptions to focus on the problematic focus (of problems) and the action focus (of strategies). Succinct focused text, analogous in style to a legal brief, is an editorial preference.</li> </ul> <p><b><br /> <a name="bias" title="bias" id="bias"></a>Editorial bias</b></p> <p>In addition to biases implicit in the points above, there are several overriding editorial biases (<a href="/archive/ency-comm-4-2" target="_self">see more</a>):</p> <ul> <li> <b>Comprehensiveness:</b> The editorial policy is not to give special weight to problems or strategies in particular subject areas. In fact there is a definite resistance to currently fashionable topics which may replaced by other preoccupations within months or years. Nonetheless, problems and strategies in such areas are assiduously profiled as part of the larger pattern of problems and strategies that such fashions may ignore. Perspectives of marginalized or minority constituencies are especially valued as a reflection of cultural and cognitive diversity.</li> <li> <b>"Anti-topic"</b>: The databases are not concerned with "subjects" or "topics" of research, study or commentary. Every effort is made to focus on the problematic nature of problems and the action-oriented nature of strategies. This discipline contrasts with conventional "encyclopedic" approaches, thus focusing on the condition of society today within the editorial resources available.</li> <li> <b>"Anti-model":</b> The problems and strategies profiled emerge from "models", "theories", "philosophies", "belief systems" and the like. The focus is to document the perception as it is valued by those so mobilized, but not to document the model as such, although it may be referenced incidentally in passing. It is accepted that this editorial bias is the reflection of an implicit model.</li> <li> <b>"Non-political":</b> The problems and strategies profiled may well be associated with quite different political movements and perspectives. No particular perspective is valued but every effort is made to profile perspectives that may be little known or negatively valued by majority constituencies.</li> <li> <b>Classification:</b> Strong arguments can be put forward for ordering the profiles in the different databases in particular ways. The tendency to do so is considered to be part of the intellectual trap of the times. This trap has been avoided by reducing the dependence on any particular classification system (<a href="/archive/ency-comm-3-3" target="_self">see more</a>). Particular thematic areas may be the subject of official classifications developed by mandated international agencies. But their "official" approaches are not considered as necessarily determining how hierarchies should be organized within the databases. Many official classifications have their own difficulties, including political pressures, and alternatives are continually proposed. The challenge is that their complementarity is not necessarily recognized. Certain strategy types are easily neglected, notably those in Row 3 and those in Column D. Because of its lower "dimensionalty", it tends to be easier to engage in strategy A1, for example -- which is coded with the lightest colour in the table. <b>The current challenge is to give meaning and force to strategies of type D3, that correspond to sustainable development</b> -- which is coded the darkest in the table. <p>The words used to describe each of the 12 individual strategy types are commonly encountered in describing strategies -- notably in the declarations of international organizations. The colour coded diagonals suggest a pattern of progressive engagement towards sustainable action "on the ground": </p><ul> <li> <b>Diagonal A1</b>: Monitoring type strategy, frequently used as a preliminary to any other strategy, whether relating to massacres or environmental disasters. Response to many issues is often limited to this, notably by the academic community.</li> <li> <b>Diagonal A2-B1</b>: Acknowledgment of the issue and adaptive response to it. This has little effect "on the ground" but administrative and intellectual frameworks and procedures may be adjusted to take account of the issue.</li> <li> <b>Diagonal A3-B2-C1</b>: The issue evokes empathy (reassuring the victims), official warnings and calls for action, and initiation of patterns of response. This is typical of responses by the international community / media / local activist complex. New issues, including potential genocides, notably evoke strategies of type B2, namely "deploring", "protesting", etc by the international community -- possibly accompanied by "undertaking", and "initiating" strategies (type C1), but without significant follow-up.</li> <li> <b>Diagonal B3-C2-D1</b>: Concerns expressed on the preceding diagonal may lead to strategies of type B3, namely "resolving", "deciding", etc -- on the part bodies such as the UN Security Council. Decisions are taken, coalitions are formed, orders are given and supervisory structures are set up. This may be framed as effecting change, but this form of implementation typically lends itself to positive reporting on action taken with little awareness of whether this is effective "on the ground".</li> <li> <b>Diagonal C3-D2:</b> Enforcement becomes evident "on the ground" and coordination is ensured with respect to the continuity of the implementation process. Unfortunately the engagement is such that the "continuity" is essentially short-term and tends to be eroded and abandoned once attention passes to other issues. This is typical of many responses to issues that are momentarily in the public eye.</li> <li> <b>Diagonal D3</b>: Action becomes sustainable through building in procedures that guarantee long-term continuity based on appropriate attention to feedback loops. However any such form of grounded, sustainable action is itself challenged by unforeseen issues and feedback loops that may call for new kinds of issue detection and monitoring (Diagonal A1).</li> </ul> <b>Negative variants</b> of each strategy type necessarily also exist. These are suggested by column labels at the foot of the table. <p><b>Meeting participation:</b> It is also fruitful to see each of the 12 strategy types as reflecting the complementary views that need to be expressed at an archetypal strategic "roundtable" (Camelot style). The specific relationships between each such view have been tentatively explored in an earlier study on <i>Toward a New Order of Meeting Participation</i> (<a href="http://www.laetusinpraesens.org/docs/contract.php">http://www.laetusinpraesens.org/docs/contract.php</a>) that charts the <i>Shadowy Roundtable Hidden within every Meeting. </i>This endeavours to show how the seemingly "external" issues tend to be reflected in the different behaviour styles of meeting participants -- and the need for a new kind of participant contract to move beyond such constraints. </p><p><b>Torus representation: </b>As implied above, the Row 1 strategies can also usefully be considered as bordering the Row 3 strategies -- by rolling the table into a cylinder. Similarly the Column A strategies can also be considered as bordering the Column D strategies -- by connecting the ends of the cylinder to form a torus. It is on the surface of this torus that the connectivities between the strategy types might be more appropriately comprehended. A possible representation of this structure, appropriately coloured, has been developed as a hypersphere to illustrate Arthur Young's insights (<a href="http://www.hypersphere.com/hs/abouths.html">http://www.hypersphere.com/hs/abouths.html</a>) </p><p><b>Individual action:</b> The relevance of the above typology can also be explored in relation to individual or community group action.
