"How we stay true to our mission"

Dr. Hilary Kahn,
President,
Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA)

On 18 February 2018 you are going to kick off the 2018 AIEA Annual Conference. What convinced you to meet in Washington, DC this year?

Meeting in Washington DC has always allowed us to have more involvement from the policymakers and staffers that are based in the area. We recognize the importance of advocacy, and having our conference in DC allows us to advance that agenda, particular for our institutional members based in North America.

You have chosen the Washington Marriott Wardman Park as the home for your convention. Why?

With the growing numbers of participants at our conferences, including from 45+countries, there are a limited number of venues in Washington, DC that can accommodate our numbers and meeting needs. The Marriott Wardman Park has proven to be a good fit for us.

What is the social and cultural resonance of your conference?

The cultural and social ethos of our conference is networking and collective knowledge production. We work diligently to create an environment that emphasizes collaboration and conversation, and we provide multiple opportunities for our attendees to connect professionally and socially.

For those delegates who cannot join you in Washington, DC, can they participate remotely / via social media?

Those who are not able to join us in Washington, DC are able to follow the active conference Twitter feed and will be able to download presentations following the conference.

What are currently the main challenges for AIEA as an association, as well as for the conference?

AIEA is growing, as is the field of international education. One challenge for AIEA is how we stay true to our mission, which is to support international education leadership, in a relentlessly changing, increasingly diverse, and often turbulent world.
