History

Founded in implementation of an Agreement, signed 23 Oct 1963, Niamey, by representatives of 9 States. Agreement revised: 2 Feb 1968; 15 Jun 1973. General Regulations for Navigation on the River Niger adopted at meeting of Council of Ministers, 22 Feb 1974, Niamey. Amended: 2 Feb 1968; 15 Jun 1973; 26 Jan 1979, Lagos (Nigeria). Listed name adopted, Faranah (Guinea), on signature of a new Convention.

Aims

Harmonize and coordinate national policies for development of the basin; plan development of the basin through development and execution of an "Integrated Development of the Basin"; design, achieve, exploit and maintain common infrastructures and projects; control and regulate navigation on the river, its tributaries and sub-tributaries; mobilize funds for studies and works needed for the development of the resources of the Basin.
