History

Founded 18 Jun 1954, The Hague (Netherlands), replacing H-XH8204 - International Atlantic Committee, set up 1952, Oxford (UK). Registered office in Brussels (Belgium). Serves as the umbrella organization for the 36 Atlantic Councils of the NATO Alliance, both Allied and Partner countries. Registered in accordance with Belgian law, 2006.

Aims

Educate and inform the public regarding NATO's missions and responsibilities; engage the successor generation in promoting the importance of the Transatlantic security relationship, while simultaneously helping to shape its future; develop and maintain a strong network of responsible future political leaders; promote solidarity of the populations of the North Atlantic area, and of those whose governments have signed NATO PfP or Mediterranean Dialogue Agreements, and/or those who are directly concerned with the affairs of Euro-Atlantic security; support development of civil society in the Black Sea area, the Transcaucasus, and Central Asia; conduct research into the role of NATO and its expansion to the countries of Central Europe and the former Soviet Union; pursue dialogues with countries bordering the Mediterranean and in the Middle East which work in cooperation with the Alliance; deepen cooperation between the ATA, its Member Associations, the governments of its Member Associations, NATO, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the European Union.
