Founded following regulation by E-XE3068 - Council of the European Union, then the Council of the European Communities, and E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC), then the Commission of the European Communities to open their archives to the public. A subsequent agreement, 1984, between the Commission of the European Communities and F-XF3293 - European University Institute (EUI) laid the groundwork for establishing the Archives in Florence (Italy). Opened to researchers and the public, 1986. Memorandum of Understanding between EUI and EC reinforced Historical Archives' role, 2011. Council of European Union amended regulations, Mar 2015. New Framework Partnership Agreement between EUI and EC signed, 15 Apr 2015; renewed 2019.
