In the summer of 2004, the UIA partnered with the Europhil Trust to edit, publish and host its Civil Society Glossary. This is the most recent version which appeared online in 2006.

The Civil Society Glossary is a resource of terms and definitions used when working in and with the civil society sector.

Term Definition

An agreement creating a legally binding obligation contained in a deed.

In British law, a covenant to pay to a charitable organisation or trust an annual sum for 7 years or life (whichever is shorter) gives certain tax relief.

General Interest
Matters of import to all persons; something in which the community at large has an interest and by which it is effected.
In-House Activities
Activities performed by an organisation with its own staff and resources.
An expenditure of money-for income or profit or to purchase something of intrinsic value.
