Founded

1940

History

Founded in response to the silence of the Catholic Church's hierarchy in the face of the rise of fascism, in order to focus on a just social order. Activities began primarily in Europe; widened in the 1950s to inform people in church and society about the international agenda. Education/policy section and an overseas development programme, named U-XG6638 - International Cooperation for Development (ICD) in 1990s.

Aims

Seek practical ways to assist people in the developing countries in their chosen path to development; eradicate poverty and exclusion through challenging unjust political, social and economic structures locally and globally; encourage full and active participation of the poorest, most excluded groups in decision-making which works to reduce vulnerabilities stemming from conflict, war and environmental degradation; promote equitable distribution of resources and power between men and women and between communities and nations; promote basic rights, cultural diversity and multi-cultural understanding.
