History

Jun 1971, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), within the framework of U-XF5181 - Trans-African Highway System, by Resolution 226 (X) of Ministers of E-XE4174 - United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), as Trans-African Highway Coordinating Committee -- Comité de coordination de la route transafricaine. New Agreement signed 1978, Yaoundé (Cameroon), designating Bangui (Central African Rep) as Headquarters of the TAH Authority and with the title Trans-African Highway Authority -- Autorité de la route transafricaine. TAHA Secretariat established 1981, under listed title, when Coordinating Committee ceased to exist. Operated under the aegis of ECA and H-XD3027 - Organization of African Unity (OAU). Overall programme was coordinated by H-XE1436 - Trans-African Highway Bureau. As of 2001, no longer functions.

Aims

Promote and coordinate the planning, improvement, construction and maintenance of the Trans-African Highway linking Mombasa to Lagos (Nigeria), and its feeder links; take necessary measures for its efficient utilization, particularly to standardize and harmonize customs formalities.

Structure

Governing Council, composed of Ministers of member States, in addition to Executive Secretary of ECA and OAU, is policy making body, meets once a year and elects its Chairman and Vice-Chairman who remain in office until the following general meeting. Secretariat, the executive organ. Advisory Board, comprising representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.
