History
Nov 1950, Paris (France), at a meeting requested by committees in 1948 and 1949. Statutes adopted 1951; modified: 1953, 1956, 1965, 1979. Also referred to in French as Comité international pour la documentation des sciences sociales. Registered in accordance with French law.
Aims
Collect, up-date and disseminate information on documentation services in the social sciences; ensure systematic development of such documentary instruments; advise social science bodies on questions they submit relating to bibliography and documentation; draw up and disseminate technical rules to improve management of social science information and documents; contribute to research plans and programmes in the framework of the relationship between research and information/documentation; make national, regional and global development and reinforcement of social science infrastructures of central concern. Specifically, initiate relevant research and training so as to promote information exchange and dissemination through: networking; eliminating linguistic, technical and legal barriers to information flow; producing disciplinary and thematic bibliographic databases and overviews; stimulating creation of empirical databases and secondary analysis of empirical datasets.
