History
30 Mar 1942, Washington DC (USA), by decision of 3rd Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the American Republics, Jan 1942, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Regulation went into effect, 1 Sep 1948. Regulations revised: 1949; 1964; 2007. The new Regulation, 14 Jun 2007, constitutes the Guidelines and Procedures to follow by the Member States and Components of IADB as an Entity of the D-XD3030 - OAS, as established in the new Statute approved at the XXXII General Extraordinary Assembly, 15 March 2006, Washington DC. The Regulation marks the legal incorporation of the IADB into the bosom of the OAS, a process that was initiated in 1948 after its first 6 years of existence and that culminates 64 years after its creation, allowing it to share the same objectives under the same institutional roof under the basic principles of civilian oversight and the democratic formation of its authorities.
Aims
Provide the OAS and its Member States with technical and educational advice and consultancy services on matters related to military and defence issues in the Hemisphere in order to contribute to the fulfillment of the OAS Charter.
Structure
Council of Delegates, composed of national delegations of Member States along with Chair and Vice-Chair. Secretariat, headed by Director-General, composed of Sub-Secretariat for Advisory Services (SAS) and Sub-Secretariat for Administrative and Conference Services (SACS). It provides advisory, administrative, financial and logistics support. Educational component: E-XF6532 - Inter-American Defense College (IADC).
