History
25 Apr 1952, by an agreement between the Egyptian Government and B-XB3383 - UNESCO. Original title Arab States Fundamental Education Centre (ASFEC) or Arab States Regional Centre for Functional Literacy in Rural Areas. Present name adopted, 1982, when became an autonomous public organization under the Minister of Higher Education (Egypt), serving both Arab and African states.
Aims
Provide training for leaders and specialists in literacy and adult education.

Board of Directors, headed by First Under-Secretary of State of the Ministry of Higher Education (Egypt) and run by a Director (Under-Secretary of State) through the following 6 Departments: Training; Curriculum and Education Materials; Planning and Evaluation; Education Technology (Audiovisual Aids); Information (including Library, Documentation, Translation, Publishing and Statistics); General Secretariat (which includes the following Sub-departments: Financial Affairs, Premises Affairs, Residence Affairs, Engineering Affairs, Personnel Affairs, Printing Press).
